Know About Digital Radiography in Dentistry

In place of traditional photographic film, digital X-ray sensors are used in digital radiography (a form of x-ray imaging). It is also applicable for dentistry. In digital radiography, pixels or light sensitive elements are used for constructing images. A varied range of shades of grey colored pixels are formed based on the exposure to radiation. These are arranged in special grid and rows on the sensor. These sensors detect the radiation and then an image is displayed on the monitor.

Quantification of the output of each pixel is known by their conversion to numbers by a frame grabber within the computer. These numbers ranging from 0 to 256 represent shades of grey. It relates to the contrast resolution and size of pixels which is related to spatial resolution. Application of digital radiography offers many advantages. Some of them are listed below:

  • This technique can be used easily
  • High efficient data storage capacity is available.
  • It can enhance images, whereas the conventional radiography cannot manipulate images.
  • Radiographic images can be observed immediately. It is a significant clinical advantage in providing treatment for many oral procedures.
  • It avoids the loss of conventional films. Adequate back-up procedures involved in conventional radiography can be eliminated.
  • The technology uses less radiation when compared to traditional methods. 70 to 80 percent less radiation is used.
  • It enhances better communication with other practitioners regarding any second opinions. The images can be sent to other clinicians within minutes in order to get cleared with any doubts.
  • Developing and fixing solutions are needed by conventional radiography which is not required for digital radiography. So the problems related to odors and stains from these solutions can be avoided. Simple software is used for this technology which is easier, cleaner, and faster.
