Trimming Plants
It should be your goal to keep the look of your mini-garden intact over the years. Usually, we select plants for such garden that are petite or slow growers. Yet, they need to be trimmed. If the plants overgrow and take up the entire area, the whole design will be lost. You may use a piece of shear to trim the plants and keep them in shape.
Watering Plants
Miniature gardens are best watered by hands. You can disrupt the entire design if you try to water using a can or hose. “When it is time to water?” is a very common question among the gardeners. One of the easiest ways to understand is to check the soil. If you press the fingertip and the soil feels moist about an inch down, do not water plants. It is better to wait until the soil is little dry.
Protecting the Garden Pieces
Direct sun, too much water and bad weather can have an adverse effect on your miniature garden pieces. We all know that any pieces made of metal will eventually if kept outdoors. Many pieces look beautiful in such a way, if it goes well with your design. But, if it is not like that, you have to protect the metal pieces. An easy way to keep the pieces from rusting is to apply a UV protectant spray each year. Usually, metal piece lasts longer than wood. If it begins to rust, clean the rust and repaint it.
Location of the Garden
You can decide the best location for your garden depending on the plants. Outdoor plants can tolerate at least half a day of sun. Whereas the plants that grow in shades have to be kept away from direct sunlight.
Most of the miniature gardens grow in containers and tend to do best with minimum lights. Ensure a spot that will not only protect the plants from direct sun but also from heavy rains. For those who are looking to keep their gardens indoor throughout the year, try to select only houseplants and plants that can sustain in very low level of light.
Effects of winter
Each country has its own weather condition in winter with which we need to adopt. For beginners who do not want to stress themselves trying too hard to keep the plants alive throughout the winter, it is best to use seasonal plants. Then you can simply remove the plants after a growing season. Those who are willing to keep their plants and miniature trees throughout the year, you will need to place the containers indoor to avoid the first frost. Remember the plants will need water in winter also. But, you cannot keep it too wet as the roots may rot.
