Poultry farming is raising of domesticated birds such as chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese and other fowl for the purpose of farming meat or eggs for production of food. Poultry farms can be of two types one is breeding farms where they raise poultry for meat and/or the second one is layer farms where they produce eggs. Chickens raised for eggs are commonly known as laying hens where as chickens raised for meat are known as broilers.

Poultry are farmed in great numbers with chickens being the most numerous. In the US, the national organization overseeing poultry food production is the Food and Drug Administration(FDA). The best breeding of chickens depends on what you want from them. Good egg layer chickens are Rhodes Island Reds (brown eggs) and Leghorns(white eggs). Great meat comes from the chickens such as Arbor Acres, Ross, and Peterson chickens which were named after the breeders who raised them.

Poultry raising became a big business in today’s world because each step is done by someone who knows what they are doing just like the dairy farming. Poultry farmers hire veterinarians or scientists to help him choose the characteristics he wants in his chickens. Breeders are known for their special kinds of chickens and the food costs are important to poultry farmers. Maize, soy, rice bran and cereals are fed to animals in the poultry.

However, raising poultry commercially meat and eggs but other products come from these animals. Chickens, ducks, turkeys and geese are birds of primary commercial importance. Though chickens have been domesticated, their meat and eggs have been mass-production commodities only since 1800.
